American Bank Reports Second Quarter 2018 Earnings

American Bank Incorporated (OTC Pink: AMBK), the parent company of American Bank, today announced earnings for the quarter and six months ended June 30, 2018.  Net income for the quarter was $1,535,000 or $0.24 per diluted share, an increase of 21.9% from $1,259,000 or $0.20 per diluted share for the second quarter of 2017.  The increase in net income for the quarter was the result of an increase in net interest income.

Total assets increased $68.5 million or 11.9% to $643.9 million as of June 30, 2018 as compared to $575.4 million as of June 30, 2017.  Net loans increased $44.3 million or 10.2%, while total deposits increased $56.9 million or 13.5% for the same period.

Return on assets for the quarter ended June 30, 2018 increased to 0.99% from 0.89% for the same period in 2017. Return on equity for the quarter ended June 30, 2018 increased to 11.58% from 9.77% for the same period in 2017.

Net interest income for the quarter ended June 30, 2018 was $4.3 million, an increase of $345,000 or 8.8% from the quarter ended June 30, 2017.  Net interest margin decreased 4 basis points to 2.87% for the quarter ended June 30, 2018 from 2.91% for the quarter ended June 30, 2017.  

The provision for loan losses was $200,000 for the quarter ended June 30, 2018 compared to $0 for the three months ended June 30, 2017. Loan quality remained strong at June 30, 2018 with two non-accruing loans totaling $730,000.  Given the current economic environment, American Bank has set aside reserves of $6.4 million or 1.33% of loans outstanding at June 30, 2018 in the event they are needed.        

Non-interest income and non-interest expense remained relatively flat for the quarter ended June 30, 2018 compared to the same quarter in 2017.

Income tax expense decreased $215,000 or 36.0% for the quarter ended June 30, 2018 compared to the same quarter in 2017.  On December 22, 2017, the U.S. government enacted comprehensive tax legislation commonly referred to as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, whereby the U.S. corporate tax rate was reduced from 34% to 21%.  As a result of this legislation, the Bank is benefitting from the lower income tax rate in 2018.

In addition to the improvement in second quarter earnings, Mark Jaindl, President and Chief Executive Officer, reported that the Excellence in Business Award was presented to American Bank by the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce in June 2018.  American Bank was recognized as a top small business employer who consistently demonstrates excellence in commitment to its community, customer and team members.

Year-to-Date Results

Net income for the six months ended June 30, 2018 was $3.0 million, or $0.48 per diluted share, an increase of $492,000 or 19.2% from the six months ended June 30, 2017.  The primary reason for the increase in net income for the six-month period ended June 30, 2018 was an increase in net interest income and a decrease in income tax expense.

Return on assets for the six-month period ended June 30, 2018 reached 1.02% compared to 0.92% for the same period in 2017.  Return on equity for the six-month period ended June 30, 2018 was 11.58% compared to 10.00% for the same period in 2017.

Net interest income for the six months ended June 30, 2018 was $8.5 million, an increase of $639,000 from the six-month period ended June 30, 2017.  Net interest margin increased 1 basis point to 2.97% year-to-date for the first six months ended June 30, 2018 compared to 2.96% for the first six months of 2017.

The provision for loan losses for the six months ended June 30, 2018 was $327,000, an increase of $314,000 from the provision of $13,000 recorded for the six months ended June 30, 2017. 

Non-interest income remained relatively flat for the six months ended June 30, 2018 compared to the six months ended June 30, 2017. 

Non-interest expense increased $364,000 for the six months ended June 30, 2018 compared to the six months ended June 30, 2017.  The increase was primarily due to an increase in salaries, employee benefits and payroll taxes.

Income tax expense decreased $557,000 or 46.1% for the six months ended June 30, 2018 compared to the six months ended June 30, 2017.
